The History and Traditions of a Quinceanera

In the Puerto Rican, Cuban, Mexican, Central American and South American cultures it is common for a young girl to celebrate her Quinceanera. This is a celebration of the growth from childhood to maturity.

The Beginning of the Quinceanera

The Quinceanera began around 500 BC with the Aztecs. The word Quinceanera can be broken into two parts: “quince,” which means 15, and “anos,” which means year.

When a girl's 15th birthday was approaching, she was taken from her family and prepared to become a woman and for marriage. She was trained in skills such as housework, cooking, and weaving.

At age 15, the young Aztec girls were presented to their community as young women, instead of girls. Also, the age of 15 became a time of decision. Girls had the choice to either devote their life to church or to marry.

The Quinceanera Traditions

The Quinceanera of today is a huge “Coming of Age” celebration. The festivities usually include music, dancing and the presentation of symbolic gifts. The festivities are similar to a wedding, with the Quinceanera dressing in a gown just as formal as a wedding gown. The first dance is between the Quinceanera and her father, where there is also typically a wedding dance with a bride and her father.

The gifts are usually presented after the formal entrance of the Quinceanera and her family. The Quinceanera usually sits on a raised platform or special place of honor. Many times the gifts are presented by either the parents or godparents.

The Symbolism of the Gifts
